Human Towers of Catalunya: Castellers de Vilafranca

Castellers de Vilafranca are the winners of the latest version of the World's Top Castells competition in Tarragona in Catalunya. The human towers were added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010 as an ‘integral part of Catalan cultural identity’.
For the 2023 Sant Jordi celebration, they brought their amazing human towers to Lisboa in Portugal.
Kids are an essential part of the human towers as they have to climb all the way to the top, and because of their weight, they are the ones capable of doing it.
A man tightens his back, preparing to build the human towers typical of Catalonia. This is a process that the team makes in couples to make sure their peers have their backs safe to handle the weight from the towers.
Music is played by a team band while the castellers lift their human towers.
A graphic on the phone shows the formation that the group needs to take with the names and the position required to build the human tower.
Spectators are also encouraged to help the castellers support the weight at the bottom of the tower.
The human towers are lifted inside the Camara Municipal de Lisboa.
